10 Creative Play Ideas for Playset Adventures
Benefits of Play | 1 year ago
If you have a backyard playset, it’s probably already one of your kids’ favorite places. Whether it's a sunny day, a cool evening, or even a drizzly afternoon, there are so many imaginative play ideas and games waiting to be discovered on your playset. No doubt, your kids have come up with a lot of fun ideas for games or imaginary play on their own.
At our last video shoot, we watched groups of kids who had just met each other initiate play ranging from hide and seek to an imaginary game that appeared to be about a small group of children planning to rule the world. They came up with tons of ideas all on their own, and it was amazing to watch them working together to implement ideas that were fun for everyone. As parents, however, we have also experienced many “there’s nothing to dooooo” choruses, so we know sometimes it helps to give kids a prompt to kickstart their fun. Here are 10 great prompts you can use with your kids:
Pirate's Cove Adventure: Transform your playset into a pirate ship! Equip your little buccaneers with cardboard telescopes, pirate hats, and eye patches. Have them search for hidden treasure (perhaps a stash of costume jewelry or plastic tokens) buried in the sandbox or hidden around the yard.
Jungle Safari: Pretend the playset is a dense jungle full of wild animals. Provide your kids with stuffed animals and binoculars. They can embark on an expedition to spot "exotic" creatures while climbing, swinging, and sliding through the jungle canopy.
Superhero Headquarters: Encourage your children to channel their inner superheroes. Use blankets or capes to create superhero costumes, and let them imagine their playset as a secret superhero hideout where they plan their daring missions to save the day.
Dinosaur Discovery: Transport your kids back to the time of the dinosaurs. Scatter toy dinosaurs throughout the playset, hiding them in various nooks and crannies. Your little paleontologists can go on a dino hunt to discover these prehistoric creatures.
Olympic Games: Host your very own mini-Olympics on the playset. Create obstacle courses, set up a mini trampoline, or organize a bean bag toss. This is a great way to combine physical activity and friendly competition.
Picnic Party: Lay a blanket on the playset deck and have a picnic in the sky! Pack sandwiches, fruit, and juice boxes. Pretend you're dining on a mountaintop or floating in the clouds while enjoying a meal together.
Space Adventure: Blast off to the stars! Turn the playset into a spaceship, and equip your astronauts with cardboard helmets and toy space tools. Explore the galaxy and make-believe discoveries on different planets.
Nature Scavenger Hunt: Promote outdoor exploration by organizing a nature scavenger hunt. Create a list of items commonly found in your yard or neighborhood (leaves, acorns, flowers) and see who can find them first.
Fairytale Castle: Transform the playset into a fairytale castle. Encourage imaginative play as your kids become knights, princesses, or wizards. Boxes and old costumes can be used to enhance their royal attire.
Storytime Theater: Inspire storytelling by having your kids create a mini outdoor theater on the playset. They can put on puppet shows, act out their favorite stories, or even come up with their own imaginative tales.
The possibilities for imaginative play on your playset are limited only by your children's creativity. Encourage them to dream big, explore, and have fun! They won't just have a good time, they will also get physical activity and develop problem-solving and social skills. So, go ahead, watch your children's imaginations soar, and enjoy some quality family time in the process.
